Bonnie Ramsey, MD
Emeritus Professor, Department of Pediatrics
I am a pediatric pulmonologist and clinical scientist with over 40 years of experience in translational research and therapeutic development in the field of cystic fibrosis. I have had consistent NIH and CF Foundation funding for over three decades and over 200 publications. My initial focus of research was treatment of P aeruginosa (Pa) infections in Cystic Fibrosis and understanding the natural history of Pa infections in CF. My work led to the development of inhaled tobramycin (TOBI) as an FDA approved therapy for patients with CF. I then established the CFF Therapeutics Development Network (CF TDN) which I led from 1998- 2015. I continue to serve as a senior advisor to the TDN and advise other pediatric subspecialties in development of clinical trials networks such as pediatric oncology (e.g.,U-01 TR002487 below). Through this network I was a key leader in the development of multiple CFTR modulators such as the triple combination elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor.
I have been acknowledged for my contributions to CF including APS John Howland Award (2025), Paul D’ Sant Agnese Award (1998), the Lifetime Achievement Award (2013), the Richard Talamo Award (2022-renamed the Talamo-Ramsey Award in my honor) and the CF Legacy Award(2024) from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society (2014), elected to the American Pediatric Society in 2000, National Academy of Medicine in 2015, and received the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize (2018). Since becoming an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine in January 2023, I am serving as senior consultant for the NIDDK supported P30 – Cystic Fibrosis Research and Translation Center ( Drs. Pradeep Singh and Chris Goss, multi-PI’s) and for the NCATS supported Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) at the University of Washington. As the former Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics ( 1998-2022), I have had extensive experience in mentoring pulmonary fellows and junior faculty in both translational science and career guidance. I continue to serve on the faculty for the national Clinical Research Scholars Program supported by the CF Foundation.
