Office of Faculty Affairs: Promotion & Career Development Resource

Dear Faculty,

Happy almost Spring! I believe it is coming because I keep seeing new daffodils and tulips popping out of the ground. Soon, it will be time for a walk up to see the cherry blossoms! This time of year always makes me think about the next chapters and new starts, particularly after winter's cold and dark days.

With that in mind, I thought this month I would focus on resources for you as you think about the next chapter in your career. Our website has a section focused on career advancement, which is worth checking out. If you are starting to think about promotion to associate professor (or in the process of preparing a package for promotion), our workshop is on April 3rd at 1pm (sign up here). Or if your department requires a Teaching Portfolio, join us on March 6th at 9 am for a great session on how to create an outstanding portfolio (sign up here). Both sessions will also be recorded and posted on the faculty website. The promotion process can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming, but we are here to help make it manageable!

For those further in their career, our offerings for advancing to professor (and the next chapters beyond that) will be available again in the fall, but the recordings and slides are always accessible on our promotions page. Here, you will also find all the department criteria for promotion (and you really need to know what your department prioritizes), our UW SOM CV format, the SOM A&P guide, and much more. We also have a new Faculty Coaching program, which I will talk about more in a future email (as we open up enrollment further and introduce group coaching), as well as new day-long small group workshops dedicated to career design. I recommend you take a look at Thrivecast, as we have episodes on many of these topics.

Finally, if you are thinking about promotion, wondering about the next steps in your career, or feeling a little stuck, please reach out (pkritek@uw.edu). I'd love to talk to you about what's available to help you navigate that next chapter!
