Do not Apply for OpenAI Research Grants and Graduate Fellowships if UW Cannot Agree to the Given Terms

The information below is being shared by the UW Office of Research, which has also communicated directly to OpenAI about offering an opportunity for research grants and graduate fellowships made available here

Due to terms associated with the application to which the University cannot agree, faculty should not apply for these grants, and students should be discouraged from applying for these fellowships.

By applying, you are stating you have read and acknowledged the “fine print,” which involves giving OpenAI, Inc. certain rights to intellectual property and research results, including certain publication rights, irrespective of whether your proposal is chosen for funding. In addition, you are stating that you are willing to take on certain liabilities should the work product you provide in your application or develop during the grant lead to a claim against OpenAI, Inc. As a University, we are not pursuing this particular funding opportunity due to these terms.

If you apply directly, note that UW does not allow you to include any results, information, or other developed work that is considered University owned or licensed. Research done at UW under external sponsorship is considered University owned. Also, if funded, and depending on the terms, you may be unable to use University resources to carry out the work.
