Seeking Chair for the department’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee.

The appointment comes with a 0.1 FTE salary support. Interested faculty should send a letter of intent and CV to Dr. Walker and Dr. Jason Deen for review by Friday, February 23rd.

The mission of the JEDI Committee is to champion equity in all forms (including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, disability, age, religion, and history of immigration/displacement) for the faculty and staff of our department.

Additionally, the JEDI Committee is committed to advancing anti-racist actions and policies within our department and for our communities. We acknowledge that structures of racism, inequity, bias, and privilege exist within our department, and we commit to the investigation and disruption of these.

Dr. Sabreen Akhter leads the JEDI Committee, which has about 40 members. The Committee’s membership encompasses faculty from all divisions within the Department of Pediatrics, fellows, faculty from within the SCRI, and staff members from within the department. The Committee meets quarterly and has been advancing four strategic priorities, which are:

COMMUNITY BUILDING: Building a community of support and an inclusive environment for diverse and underrepresented faculty members and staff in the UW Department of Pediatrics

TRAINING & SYSTEMIC CHANGE: Promoting equity and antiracism through training and systemic change, including the development and support of policies, curricular, and educational initiatives

RECRUITMENT & RETAINMENT: Prioritizing recruitment and retention of underrepresented and other traditionally minoritized faculty members

MENTORSHIP: Promoting mentorship and sponsorship of medical trainees, particularly those from underrepresented or other minoritized identities

The goals of each strategic priority are advanced through four subcommittees, which JEDI Committee members lead.

The expectations of the JEDI Committee Chair are to:

  • Convene quarterly meetings to advance each strategic priority and serve as a place for networking and sharing amongst EDI leaders across the institution.
  • Meet regularly with Dr. Leslie Walker (Chair of the Dept of Pediatrics, SVP, CAO) and Dr. Jason Deen (AVC of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) to review priorities and occasionally present the Committee’s work at department-wide Faculty Meetings.
  • Manage the execution of deliverables and goals the Committee has set or is charged with by the AVC of EDI.
  • Meet with subcommittee leads routinely to aid in advancing each strategic priority.
  • Be a liaison to the residency Diversity Committee (DCOMM) leadership to advance mentorship and sponsorship of DCOMM residents.
  • Work with the Committee’s administrative coordinator to create and submit a yearly budget that encompasses the needs of the Committee.
  • Continue to recruit new faculty and fellow members to the Committee.
  • Be a central resource for anyone within the department seeking input or resources related to JEDI concerns.
  • Continuously update the priorities and resources on the JEDI Committee website, a repository for the department’s JEDI-related efforts.

Interested faculty should send a letter of intent and CV to Dr. Walker and Dr. Jason Deen for review.
