Now Accepting Applications for the July 2024 AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Seminar
The UW School of Medicine is proud to again sponsor up to 2 UW School of Medicine women faculty to attend the AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar scheduled for July 16th-19th, 2024 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, CA. This program is designed to provide leadership training to women in academic medicine and sciences with a focus on career development, self-advocacy, and networking. The Dean’s Standing Committee on Women in Medicine and Science will review applications to be sponsored for this program. If you are selected to attend the AAMC Early Career Seminar, the School of Medicine will support your travel and registration fees up to $3,750.
Unlike previous years, applicants selected by the committee are not guaranteed acceptance by the AAMC but will receive an endorsement letter as well as funding (if accepted). Eligible candidates need to have held an academic appointment at a school of medicine for 8 years or less with at least two years as an Assistant Professor (prior to the seminar date).
To apply, please send your curriculum vitae and a 1-2 page statement on how attendance will help you grow as a leader and how you will bring these skills back to the School of Medicine. Documents should be submitted in a single PDF to Kat McGhee Drummond at by Tuesday January 2nd, 2024.

The Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar is an engaging and comprehensive program designed for women physicians and scientists holding medical school faculty appointments at the assistant professor level*, with at least two years of experience in their faculty role (e.g. received faculty appointment prior to 2021), and are actively looking to advance to the next stage of their career. *Instructors will be considered based upon experience.
This three and a half-day program provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to pursue leadership roles within academic medicine. Upon seminar completion, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate leadership behaviors that include effective communication, expanding self-awareness, increasing financial acumen, and other leadership topics necessary for skill development and career advancement.
- Gain insights into overcoming challenges and developing strategies for navigating gender dynamics in the workplace.
- Create individualized leadership goals that align with their long-term career vision and short-term goals for promotion.
- Expand their network of colleagues within academic medicine and science.
The seminar will present a foundation for modeling leadership behavior, and participants will learn critical skills and strategies to assist them as they prepare for their next advancement and promotion opportunity. Due to the content focus, applicants must be actively looking to advance to the next stage of their career.
Seminar activities will focus on expanding their network of colleagues through the facilitation of peer discussions, large- and small-group sessions, and activities to gain additional insights from faculty and peers alike. There is an emphasis on establishing personal leadership skills and practices to serve as a foundation for success as women prepare to advance to higher faculty ranks and leadership positions.
