Coach Roles and Responsibilities

ACGME Requirements

The ACGME’s Next Accreditation System and Milestones initiative requires Clinical Competency Committees (CCC) to evaluate each resident’s progress in training. Each resident must receive direct observation of their clinical skills and mentorship to complete their Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) and individualized curricula for each of the 3 years of residency.

Coach Role Description

The UW Department of Pediatrics allocated funding for 18 faculty members to receive salary support of 5% FTE (~2 hours per week) to work as resident coaches and members of a clinical competency committee. Each faculty mentor is assigned 7-8 residents within a class with direct faculty support of 0.05 FTE/faculty mentor. Faculty are grouped into 1 of 5 pods (Narwhal, Humpback, Beluga, Orca, Minke) each with an Executive Resident, Associate Program Director and/or Program Director.

Specific expectations for each faculty mentor include the following:

  1. Perform direct observations of clinical skills and complete observation evaluations (Coach to schedule with residents in the resident’s clinical rotations, which may be outside of coach’s clinical site; minimum of 3 in intern year, 2 in R2 year, 1 in R3 year)
  2. Coordinate twice yearly 1:1 meeting with each resident to discuss individualized learning plans (ILPs)
  3. Review ACGME milestones for each resident and prepare milestone reports twice yearly
  4. Meet with Pod and GME leadership twice yearly for review of milestones for each resident
  5. Attend CCC meetings quarterly which include faculty development
  6. Attend annual retreats to meet with residents and facilitate small group discussions
  7. Receive annual evaluations on coaching and review with GME team

Recommended / encouraged activities for excellent coaching:

  1. Attend twice yearly social pod gatherings, winter party, and graduation banquet as a time to connect with residents
  2. Attend R2s’ personal development plan presentations as part of their professional development rotation
  3. Regular communication and informal check-ins with residents as they rotate through various rotations
  4. Consider hosting coach group social gatherings

We request a 3-year commitment (one cycle of residents) for faculty interested in this opportunity. Interested faculty should contact their division head to assure that this activity is consistent with their responsibilities.
