2024-2025 Success for Underrepresented Faculty (SURF) Cohort: Applications Now Open

Applications are open for the fourth cohort of the Success for Underrepresented Faculty (SURF) Program. Please read on for information on the program and apply today! Applications are due Wednesday, April 10th. Click here to fill out the application.

SURF Recruitment Criteria:

The SURF program is focused on early career faculty who are underrepresented in medicine and science (URMS). SURF cohorts include faculty on diverse career paths, including Biomedical Researchers, Clinicians, Clinician-Scientists, Clinician-Educators, and Teaching Faculty.

Reasons to Apply:

Faculty applying to the SURF program should seek to build a peer network, enhance their career environment, and build skills to thrive academically. One SURF alumni shared:

"The SURF Program provided personalized and highly relevant career planning and development strategies, with a URM perspective. The balance of group sessions and 1:1 mentorship allowed the opportunity to learn from others' experiences and discuss personal needs at length. Most importantly, SURF provided the tools needed to tackle career challenges effectively and to succeed in medicine."

Program Goals:

Establish a solid foundation for career success, including:

  • Crafting a well-defined career mission and goals
  • Developing relationships with mentors and leaders
  • Practicing decision-making and negotiating skills
  • Building a three-year roadmap for success

Program Commitment:

SURF is a small-group 10-month program with an intentional commitment of time, energy, and effort. Participation in SURF requires:

  • An average 2-3 hour per month commitment
  • Monthly 90-minute group meetings
  • Scheduled 1:1 meetings with faculty leaders throughout the year
  • Two half-day career development seminars designed for the SURF cohort
