Program Description
Funded visiting resident rotations in Department of Pediatrics Subspecialties (Adolescent Medicine, Cardiology, Child Abuse, Craniofacial medicine, Critical Care, Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Hepatology, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Medical Biochemical Genetics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Nephrology, Pulmonary, Rheumatology) will be available at Seattle Children's Hospital and other affiliated training sites from July through September 2025 for qualified applicants who are planning to apply for fellowship in a Pediatric Subspecialty and who are committed to contributing to a physician workforce that prioritizes and celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusivity. This includes residents:
- Who have demonstrated interest and participation in diversity programs
- Who have overcome significant barriers in their pathway to medicine
- Who are involved in activities and/or organizations that serve diverse and/or marginalized communities, e.g., Association of Native American Medical Students, Association of American Indian Physicians, Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians, Latino Medical Student Association, National Hispanic Medical Association, Student National Medical Association, National Medical Association, and others
- Who attend(ed) institutions that have historically served marginalized learners, e.g., Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and others
- Who are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds
- Who were first generation college students
- Who are from rural communities
Residents of all backgrounds are invited to apply. Funding includes a $4000 stipend to be used for travel, housing, licensing fees, and meals (subject to taxes).
Visiting residents will be paired with a faculty mentor based on their stated interests and interact with residents and faculty who are part of our Residency and Faculty Diversity Committees.
Application Requirements
This program is open to applicants who are in their final year in an ACGME-accredited Residency and planning to apply to a Pediatric Subspecialty fellowship in 2025. Applicants must provide the following:
- Brief statement of interest in the Pediatric Subspecialty and the visiting rotation (1 page limit). Consider the following prompts when writing:
- What personal attributes, life experiences, strengths, and/or challenges impact your future as a physician in interacting effectively with diverse patients and your peers
- Describe an experience in which you have encountered or confronted inequities in the health sciences
- Discuss your motivation and interest in the Pediatric Subspecialty or Subspecialties to which you will be applying
- Your prior or current involvement with activities/organizations that serve diverse or marginalized communities and/or ways in which you may contribute to diversity, equity, and/or inclusivity in the field
- One letter of recommendation from a Pediatric attending
- Curriculum vitae
- Completed Funded Visiting Resident Elective Application
We will start accepting applications on 3/15/25. The application deadline is 8/1/25. However, the program utilizes a rolling admission process in which residents are accepted or waitlisted at the time of their submission of a complete application. Onboarding takes approximately 1-2 months; please plan accordingly when submitting your application.
